Decision-Making Framework (DMF)

What Is the Decision-Making Framework?

The Decision-Making Framework (DMF) is a disciplined approach to decision-making that promotes using the best knowledge to explore the full range of outcomes, identify ways to optimize risk, discover the best alternative and prioritize the path forward.

The DMF helps us collaborate to make good decisions because it provides a framework (instead of a rigid approach) for applying good critical and economic thinking. The DMF prompts us to:

  • Define the opportunity or problem
  • Clarify objectives
  • Determine viability
  • Develop a range of alternatives
  • Analyze the alternatives
  • Select the best alternative
  • Determine the next steps
  • Communicate and seek approvals (if needed)

Learning More About the DMF

Employees mostly learn how to apply the DMF by observing and working with others. One way to get started is by talking to your supervisor about:

  • How has the team applied the DMF in the past? What level of involvement might you have using the DMF in the future?
  • Who can help you learn more about the DMF and mentor you as you use it?
  • What opportunities exist for you to practice and apply the DMF now or in the near future? How will you receive feedback and guidance?
